Govy,

Great ideas! In addition to contributing to a wiki, I think the establishment of mentoring programs should be set up across government - not only for the Boomers to mentor Gen X/Y but for Gen X/Y to mentor the Boomers related to the use of new technology! It's a two-way street!

I worked for the federal government for five years (military public affairs). My dream was always to enter SES.

I definitely think there's going to be a big hole left when many of the upper-level management start movin' on to greener pastures. I'm sure there's many people that don't want to go through another transition.

I have not yet gone through one myself, since I'm just going on 4 years in the Government, but I know I'm in for a lot more than just the upcoming one. It will be interesting to see how the workforce changes to meet the demands of a smaller upper-management workforce...and coincidentally those that have the agency knowledge all locked up inside their heads.

One thing that would certainly help would be for agencies to setup a wiki for retention of that knowledge so it can passed onto the younger, inexperienced employees coming into service. It would probably be just as wise to start requiring employees with less than 1 year before early-outs to spend a minimum of 20% of their time dedicated to contributing to the agency wiki. Anything, and everything, will help incoming employees to get off the ground running...scratch that...sprinting in a marathon! They'll need it.
